Drum Type Magnetic Separator

An efficient way to extract ferrous material from dry, free-flowing bulk products — a stationary permanent magnet inside a rotating non-magnetic stainless-steel drum delivers purified product, continuously and automatically.

Continuous & automatic Ferrite or rare-earth Removal or recovery

Overview

Purified product, free of tramp metal

Magnetic drum separators provide an efficient means for extracting ferrous material from dry, bulk products in free-flowing processing systems. They comprise a stationary permanent magnet — either standard ferrite magnets or high-power rare-earth magnets — enclosed in a non-magnetic stainless-steel drum. Product flow is diverted so it falls onto the top and flows across the drum surface; ferrous matter is drawn to the surface and held by the magnet, leaving purified product ready for processing without the worry of costly damage caused by tramp metal.

Features & benefits

Built for free-flowing dry products

Automatic separation

Non-ferrous product falls from the drum normally while ferrous clings on and is discharged into a collection container — continuously.

Ferrite or rare-earth

A stationary magnet of standard ferrite or high-power rare earth, selected to suit the duty.

Stainless-steel drum

A non-magnetic stainless-steel drum encloses the magnet, suitable for food, chemical and process duties.

Protects equipment

Keeps tramp metal out of downstream machinery, avoiding the costly damage it can cause.

Removal or recovery

Used to remove iron from product, or to recover iron from minerals, ores, slag and recycling streams.

Sized to your duty

Specified to your material and the type, size and quality of ferrous to be separated.

Drum type magnetic separator working principle

Working principle

Ferrous clings, product falls free

Product flow is diverted so that it falls onto the top of the drum and flows across its surface. Ferrous matter in the flow is drawn to the drum’s surface and held there by the powerful stationary magnet inside, while non-ferrous product falls away from the side of the drum in the normal manner.

As the portion of the drum carrying the ferrous material rotates round to the side opposite the product flow, it moves beyond the magnetic field. With the field reduced, the ferrous matter falls from the drum into a separate collection container — leaving purified product ready for processing.

Applications

Iron removal & iron recovery

  • Glass & cullet and slag-industry minerals.
  • Abrasives & refractories.
  • Chemical compounding and rubber reclaim.
  • Food, grain & agro processing.
  • Industrial minerals — iron recovery.
  • Iron ores — iron recovery.
  • Slag — iron recovery.
  • Recycling streams — iron recovery.

FAQs

Drum Type Magnetic Separator — common questions

How does the drum separate ferrous from product?
Product flows across a rotating non-magnetic stainless-steel drum. Ferrous matter is drawn to and held on the drum surface by the stationary magnet inside, while clean product falls away. As the drum rotates past the magnetic field, the captured ferrous drops into a separate collection container.
Ferrite or rare-earth magnet — which do I need?
The drum can house a standard ferrite magnet or a high-power rare-earth magnet. We select the magnet based on your material and the type, size and quality of the ferrous you need to separate.
Can it recover iron as well as remove it?
Yes. The same principle works either way — to remove iron from products like glass, food and chemicals, or to recover iron from industrial minerals, iron ores, slag and recycling streams.
How do you size it?
Sizing depends on the size, type and quality of the material, the type of separation, the purification or concentration required and the ferrous to be removed. Share these and our engineers will specify the right drum.
